Victor Marx grew up in a violent, perverse, and evil home. As a result, the young man from Mississippi developed thick skin and self-defense mechanisms that served him well in the US military and international martial arts competitions. But when God called Victor out of sin and destruction, He also called him into the ministry…which meant Victor would need to find his “fit” in God’s Kingdom.
Initially, Victor tried serving as an associate pastor at a church in Hawaii. However, making the transition from warrior to shepherd proved to be a challenge, as evidenced by a counseling session that went wrong.
Way wrong.
Pastor Victor had been working with a young couple that were having difficulties in their marriage. He’d spent a lot of time trying to help them, and one day, the young wife called him at his church office to say she’d caught her husband being unfaithful. As she wept on the other end of the line, Victor tried to console her and encourage her, and then he prayed for her.
Not five minutes after he hung up the call, one of the secretaries knocked on his office door to inform him he had a visitor. It turned out to be none other than the adulterous young man he’d just been talking about on the phone! He strolled into Victor’s office and sat down near the desk while Victor took a chair between the young man and the door.
That’s going to be an important detail in this story.
The Right Reverend began talking with the young man, but the guy was dancing around the subject. As his patience wore thin, Victor let it be known that he was aware of the young man’s infidelity. The color immediately drained from the young husband’s face and he became even more defensive. The conversation quickly escalated in volume as the young man blamed his wife for his indiscretions, a tactic that Victor dismissed as cowardly and childish. The young man jumped to his feet, exploded with anger, and pointed his finger in Victor’s chest shouting for the pastor to butt out of his business.
So, Victor did what any loving pastor would do: he punched him in the face! As the young man reeled backwards, Victor moved behind him, picked him up, and body-slammed him onto the office floor! While he screamed for help, Victor pinned him down and wailed on his head with his fists. Pretty soon, a couple of the other pastors ran into the office and shouted for Victor to stop beating the young man. Victor did, but only after he believed he’d made his point.
That was years ago. Thankfully, that failure wasn’t final. These days, Victor and his wife, Eileen, lead an international rescue mission called All Things Possible based out of Colorado. Together with his former “associates” from the military, these “missionaries” kick down doors in some of the darkest corners of the globe and rescue children from the tortured existence of human trafficking. The boys and girls are then placed in Christian homes for recovery, healing, and most importantly, biblical counseling.
God saved a wounded man who was rough around the edges…and then gave him a ministry where he could use his skills to bless God and benefit others.
We should all praise God that Victor isn’t still doing counseling sessions….
