Ms. Spiller was making final preparations for “Career Day” in her first grade classroom when her students began to trickle in. The young children were always excited to learn about the jobs of their friends’ parents.
But this year would be one that Ms. Spiller would never forget….
As each child came forward, Ms. Spiller asked them to say the title of the job their dads held, spell it, and then describe it. Teresa was first up. She confidently walked forward and said, “My dad is an accountant. A-C-C-O-U-N-T-A-N-T. If he were here today, he would help you balance your checkbook.”
“Very good, Teresa,” said Ms. Spiller. “How about you, Jacob?”
Jacob walked to the front of the class and said, “My father is an electrician. E-L-E-K-T…. No, wait. E-L-E-C-K-T…. Ummm…, I mean, L-E-C-K….” His voice trailed off and Ms. Spiller rescued the boy by saying he could sit down.
Moving on, Ms. Spiller said, “Vinnie, you’re up next.”
Vinnie stood up and said, “My dad’s a bookie. That’s B-O-O-K-I-E. And if he were here today he’d give you ten-to-one odds that there’s no way Jacob’s ever gonna spell electrician!”
