Mason Reed might be a little boy growing up in the digital age, but his parents are the kind of adults who believe their son should also be able to function in an analog setting. As a result of mom and dad’s convictions, little Mason was taught how to tell time based on the grandfather clock in their home’s living room.
In a world where 57% of college students can’t tell time on a clock, there’s at least one 6-year-old who knows how to count to twelve and can rightly interpret what “the big hand” “the little hand” means.
Each day, his mom quizzes him at various hours by shouting out a one-minute warning. The youngster drops his toys, races into the living room, and stands in front of the clock that towers over him by several feet. His assignment is to look at the clock’s hands, count the chimes, and then report the time to his mother.
One summer morning right in the middle of his daily exam, the family clock suffered a malfunction in its gearing mechanism. Instead of ringing ten times, the clock chimed fifteen times. This was unheard of. This didn’t compute. This had never happened. The little boy immediately spun around and looked at his mother with shock and suspense. “Mommy, it’s later than it’s ever been!”
Those of us who follow Jesus, who are patiently waiting for His return, can rightly say the same thing. “Yes, it’s been a long time since Jesus made His promise. No, He hasn’t appeared yet. But…it’s later than it’s ever been!”
