Investments. Most of us think there are only two kinds: good and bad. There’s actually a third: downright ridiculous. If you doubt the existence of that category, just ask the guy who purchased the football from what was supposed to be the last touchdown pass of Tom Brady’s career.
Yikes….
It all started late in the fourth quarter of the 2022 NFC Divisional Playoff game when Mike Evan caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of the game. The Bucs’ wide receiver did what he usually does in that situation: he tossed the football into the stands.
Little did he know that football would soon be worth more than half-a-million dollars….
But Evans couldn’t have cared less about that football; his team was still down seven points to the Los Angeles Rams in a make-or-break game. The winners would advance to the NFC Championship game and a shot at the Super Bowl…while the losers would have to call it a season. The Bucs actually scored again – with only a few seconds left in the game – but it wasn’t quite enough. The Rams beat the Bucs by three points (and went on to win the Super Bowl a few weekends later).
Before fans could even exit the stadium, speculation began to swirl about whether or not Tom Brady would retire. The 44-year-old QB had spent 22 years in the NFL, had won 7 Super Bowl rings, and had set records that might never be broken. One question dominated the sporting world: “Had Tom Brady played his last game?”
The answer was yes. After a firestorm of rumors and hearsay, Brady announced his retirement from the game of football on February 1, 2022. That meant the football Mike Evans caught was the last touchdown pass of Tom Brady’s career. Since the football from Tom Brady’s first touchdown pass had recently sold for more than $400,000, the football used in his final touchdown pass was immediately put up for sale by LeLands, an auction company in New Jersey.
On Saturday, March 12, 2022, that football sold for a whopping $518,628.
And less than 24 hours later, Tom Brady announced he was returning to the NFL for another season.
Our world is filled with opportunities to make bad investments. The only way to make an investment that is certain is to make it in the Kingdom of God. The dividends are eternal.
