In 2020, China passed a law requiring married couples to participate in a 30-day “cooling-off” period before being allowed to file for divorce. Just before the law came into effect in the spring of 2021, officials noticed a strange phenomenon: Chinese couples were flocking to divorce lawyers in order to beat the new law’s start date.
Hurry up and get divorced…or you’ll have to wait an extra 30 days!
Divorce rates have been steadily climbing over the last decade-and-a-half in China, which is troubling news for a nation that claims to place an emphasis on family harmony. Some leaders hoped the quarantine of 2020 would actually help matters, but instead of providing a much-needed baby boom, the close proximity spent between husbands and wives only increased the number of divorce requests!
As the law was going into effect, the rush for divorces only went up again. Sadly, so many couples are vying for quick divorces that newspapers claim “scalpers” are selling appointments with divorce lawyers to the highest bidder.
If only we were willing to move this quickly to keep our marital vows….
