“Why does God send people to Hell?” It’s a question that most people – including many Christians – want answered.
Perhaps the answer lies in understanding why Hell even exists.
Those of us who live in bigger cities drive by prisons, county jails, or at least police stations on a regular basis. But we probably never even give them a second thought…mainly because we’ll never go there. But let me ask the question anyway: Why do they exist?
Those facilities exist because some members of our communities make decisions that necessitate their existence. Like it or not, and as heartbreaking as it is, some people make the decision to break the law, and so a place has to be built for them.
Prisons are built for law-breakers. People who do not break the law do not have to worry about going to prison because prisons aren’t built for them. Prisons are built for those who choose to rebel against the law.
Now let me ask the same question about Hell: Why does it exist?
According to Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:41, Hell was “prepared for the devil and his angels” – those who rebelled against God from the beginning. Hell was created for Satan and his demons. Hell wasn’t built for humans – those who were “created in His image.”
But sadly, billions of people have also decided to live their lives in rebellion toward God. In various sinful ways, they’ve decided to live apart from Him. A place must exist for those who live and die in their defiance and rebellion. They chose to live their lives apart from God; why would He force them to live with Him for eternity?
Hell is God’s way of honoring their decision to live apart from Him.
