When it comes to hiding money, people have lots of options: secret safes, underwear drawers, holes in the backyard, shoeboxes in the attic, and off-shore accounts. Without a doubt, some places are better than others.
Just ask the man from Sydney, Australia who hid his money inside the kitchen oven.
With several bills to pay, including his mortgage, a gentleman from Down Under put his sports car on the market so he could scrape together the necessary funds. Over the weekend, his car sold for $15,000 cash, so the man needed a place to hide his money until Monday morning.
He chose the “rarely used” oven in his home’s kitchen.
It proved to be a really bad decision. Later that same day, his wife – unaware that her husband had hidden the money in such a ridiculous place – preheated the oven to cook chicken nuggets for their two children. But the only thing she cooked was the cash.
The man chose to remain anonymous on account of his embarrassing mistake, but told local news affiliates, “It was everything I had. I’ve got nothing to my name. That money was supposed to go towards my mortgage.”
This man had at least two profound problems with regard to sound stewardship. First, he didn’t wisely manage his assets. (If he couldn’t make his mortgage payment, what business did he have in owning a sports car?) Second, he was utterly careless with the money generated from the sale. (Seriously, who thinks it’s a good idea to put money into an oven, rarely used or not?)
