Robert Herjavec is a handsome multi-millionaire who’s had tremendous success in technological enterprises. His achievements have even landed him celebrity appearances on popular TV shows like Shark Tank and Dancing With The Stars.
But none of those accolades could help him when cancer attacked his family.
In 2015, the Canadian tech tycoon was paired with professional dancer Kym Johnson as a contestant on ABC’s hit show, Dancing With The Stars. The couple was doing pretty well as a team, and since DWTS was in its 20th season, the producers were hosting “The Most Memorable Year” in the contestants’ lives.
When it was Herjavec’s turn to tell his story, he briefly described growing up under the sacrificial care of his mother. He talked about the unconditional love his mother had for him, and then he choked up as he described what happened to her in 2005. Here’s a partial transcript from the televised show:
My mom got diagnosed in 2005. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, stage four. And I remember taking the doctor outside and saying, “This can be cured, of course?” And he said, “Highly unlikely at stage four.” And I said, “Well, if it can’t be cured, how long does she have?” And he said, “About a year.”
Deep down, I thought that somebody with my resources could fix that. And I think, you learn pretty quickly, that cancer doesn’t care. One day I went to see her and she looks at me and says, “I love you, Robby.” And then she looks away, and she was gone.
The rich and the poor have at least one thing in common: death. All the money in the world can’t stop death. It just doesn’t care.
But God cares deeply, and He proved it by sending His Son, Jesus, to die for us on a cross. Because of Jesus, we’ve overcome sin, death, and the grave.
