“Crossing the line of faith.” It’s the most important step anyone will ever take, but too many Christians shortchange their relationship with Jesus by forgetting about the second step, the third step, and the millionth step. They mistakenly think they’re done after they cross the starting line.
Usain Bolt, a man who knows an awful lot about crossing lines, would never make that mistake.
“Crossing the line of faith” is a definitive step, and one that cannot be overstated. But that step which starts our relationship with Jesus is only the first one.
Remember, Jesus said, “Follow Me,” not “Take a step with Me.”
Think about it like this: What if Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, only focused on taking the first step in a race? What if he only cared about crossing the starting line? What if he never propelled himself down the rest of the track?
One thing’s for sure: he wouldn’t have all those gold medals.
Usain Bolt knows exactly how important that first step is; crossing the starting line puts him in the race. But if he wants to actually win that race, he must cross the finish line, as well.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, so must we! In other words, we need to get beyond the starting line.
Take a look at how the Apostle Paul ran his race 2,000 years ago:
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
Paul didn’t take just one step. He took lots of steps, many of which were painful. He didn’t just cross the starting line; he moved beyond it and crossed the finish line, too.
