What’s the most you’ve ever paid for your lunch? 20 bucks? Maybe $50 if you were in an airport…in Switzerland?
How about 2.1 million? Ever paid that much for lunch?
Well, in 2009, an investment fund manager from China by the name Zhao Danyang paid $2,110,100 to have lunch with American billionaire, CEO, and philanthropist, Warren Buffet.
Mr. Danyang was one of dozens of bidders in an online charity auction hosted by Ebay. The proceeds for the auction go to support the Glide Foundation, a charity that helps those stricken by poverty in the city of San Francisco.
The winner, and his friends, dined with Mr. Buffet at Smith and Wollensky Steakhouse in New York. During that luncheon, Mr. Danyang finally got the chance to talk investment strategies with the man he has long admired.
In case you’ve got 2 million dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you may be thinking, “Hmmm, I wonder how many of these charity lunches Mr. Buffet does each year?” The answer is just one, which drives up the price even more, as you might imagine.
In fact, 2008’s lunch auction was the first one to go over one million dollars. In 2007, the auction netted the charity “a mere” $600,000. Maybe the lunch was held at Burger King?
